Working with a record label is a lot like dating. I began self publishing and was noticed by a few labels in Nashville and one in London. After talking to the lot, I really resonated with The Animal Farm Music and we decided to do a "trial run". A bit scary, the label owner said "send me a song that if you had 5 minutes left on Earth - this is what you'd want to be remembered by". No pressure - right? So I sent them a scratch demo of 'This Highway Ends' and they worked it up with the session players in London. When they sent it back to me, my wife and road manager (the Colonel) didn't think it was 'Country' enough but she said "sing over it" in our kitchen. Her smile throughout the song gave it away but at the end she concluded "Oh yes, we have a match".

I'm tryin' to hold the line - straight as an arrow. And I can't tell if it's the rain - or just my sorrow. That's makin' it hard to steer. Oh maybe it's all catchin' up with me...or maybe it's just my fears.

I don't think the clock on the dashboard can be right - there's no glow on the horizon, after drivin' all night. I keep on lookin' for the next sign - maybe pull this whole rig over and find a place to hide.

There's no way that I can tell her - without makin' her cry. And ending those innocent years. There's no winds that's colder and it's no use to shoulder - you'll never dry her broken hearted tears.

So shake off those night spells - you'll loose your mind tryin' to turn around - all those dry wells.

There's no headlights on the highway - at these times of night. You start to feel as empty as the road. Some of your secrets, they escape from their chains - don't look behind...just best to let 'em go.
