I'm tryin' to hold the line - straight as an arrow. And I can't tell if it's the rain - or just my sorrow. That's makin' it hard to steer. Oh maybe it's all catchin' up with me...or maybe it's just my fears. I don't think the clock on the dashboard can be right - there's no glow on the horizon, after drivin' all night. I keep on lookin' for the next sign - maybe pull this whole rig over and find a place to hide. 'Cause down the line this highway ends - you may not see if comin' don't try and pretend. There's only so much time to try and make amends - 'cause down the line this highway ends. There's no way that I can tell her - without makin' her cry. And ending those innocent years. There's no winds that's colder and it's no use to shoulder - you'll never dry her broken hearted tears. 'Cause down the line this highway ends - it seems like there's not slowin' down - I'll tell you my friends. There's only so much time to try and make amends - 'cause down the line this highway ends. So shake off those night spells - you'll loose your mind tryin' to turn around - all those dry wells. There's no headlights on the highway - at these times of night. You start to feel as empty as the road. Some of your secrets, they escape from their chains - don't look behind...just best to let 'em go. 'Cause down the line this highway ends. So keep your hands upon the wheel and brace against the wind. There's only so much time to try and make amends, 'cause down the line this highway ends.

"Nothin' left in the bottle...nothin' left in the tank. There's no time left to argue - I've only got myself to thank. For going in too early/then stayin' out too late. It's going to cost me more than money - I've got to play it straight. At first I came out a winner - started comin' out ahead. Sometimes that roulette ball goes black - sometimes it comes up red. But you can loose it all when it comes up green - just wait! That house of cards starts burnin' down - you've got to play it straight. (Chorus) The game is hard to play, when you've got a losing hand. And you can't turn the dealer - no, they'll never understand...that this is not a simple life that any man would choose. You see some are born to win, and I think I was born to lose. Sometimes we fold it in - and sometimes we let it ride. And hope nobody calls our bluff - on the cards that we're tryin to hide. But when the price of getin' in ain't no better than the take - it's time to cash your fortune in - you've got to play it straight. The Angel's on my shoulder but the Devil's by my side...and we've got a few chips stashed away to keep this game alive. I've cursed myself before and I'll curse myself again. When am I gonna' realize that it's the house, that always wins?

"I've tried everything once - and I've done some things twice...and found the only way to fly - listen to my strong advice. You can stay here on the ground - or you can spread your wings and fly. The chance will pass before you - in the blink of an eye. (Chorus) So drink it in my friends, so we can all take flight - take hold of my hand - and ride the raven tonight. There's no need to wonder where the wicked hours go - sometimes your pocketwatch speeds up - and at times it runs down slow. But the only way to keep your speed is to draw that ravens' eye. For he knows how to guide you through this black and moonless night. (Chorus) At the end of the hallway there's light around the door. And nobody can remember if we've passed this way before. There's no need for shaky steps - don't fumble with the keys. Look up to the sky - they're gatherin' in the trees." (Chorus - (sub) take hold of the reins). - Refrain-

Hold on to your hats my friend - take a look, at just who walked inside. I don't think you know just what you're signing up for - you punch that ticket - she'll take you for a ride. Well she's been in town a time or two before my friend, I think she knows her way her around. By the time your sizing up your saddle my friend - I believe she'll have you on the ground (Chorus) It's turn and burn, when you open up the gate, it's turn and burn from the first light of the day, it's run 'em hard - cause it don't pay to loose - 'cause it's the name of the game - barrel racer blues. You should've listened to what I told ya - she's movin' on to her next show. But don't just sit there cryin' in your whiskey glass - for tonight it's another rodeo (Chorus)
